EMPLOYABILITY EMPOWERMENT SCHEME 2021
We are relaunching!
After a successful pilot in 2021, we are excited to be opening our Employability Empowerment scheme, and look forward to supporting our local community back into work.
- Are you hard-working, looking to learn, and dedicated to your future?
- Have you struggled to get back into work, or are you looking for some vital experience to help you find future work?
- Would you like some support with planning for future employment, training and preparation?
- Are you looking to access some training to help you gain the skills and qualifications you need?
- Are you passionate about our community, and the work Oasis does?
- Do you have good English communiction, and the right to work in the UK?
If yes, then see below!
Why?
Oasis believes that every person matters and, as a result develops community hubs that meet people’s holistic needs – educationally, physically, spiritually, economically, environmentally and socially – and benefit the whole person and the whole community.
Across Oasis, we are committed to the inclusion of everyone and empowering one another to reach our potential. In our community here in Waterloo, we repeatedly see the challenge of finding stable employment or career opportunities, in a climate where there is a lot of competition locally for jobs.
It is important for you to be aware that the Oasis vision, mission and ethos are inspired by the message, life and example of Jesus, which interlinked, drive our sense of purpose and our actions. Our ethos is an expression of our character and the lens through which we evaluate all we do and directly shapes our organisation’s behaviours. It is encapsulated by our:
- Passion to include everyone
- Desire to treat everyone equally, respecting differences
- Commitment to healthy and open relationships
- Deep sense of hope that things can change and be transformed
- Sense of perseverance to keep going for the long haul
It is just as important for you to be aware that Oasis is committed to people of all faiths and no faith and never seeks to impose its beliefs on anyone. Unless it is an integral part of the role you are applying for, your religious position does not have any bearing on your application. However, Oasis does require all staff to be fully aligned to and actively promote our organisational ethos and values outlined above.
What?
That’s why our pilot Employability Empowerment scheme has been designed for those who have been out of work for a while and are looking to build their skills, experience and confidence in a supportive and professional environment. We’re particularly keen to get applications from people who live in the Waterloo area.
Across 2022, we have six placements as part of this pilot scheme. Each placement will run for six months, and work within a specific area of our Hub – ranging from Foodbank & Advice, to Community & Families or Youth work. The placements will include a range of tasks and activity, so candidates need to be flexible and willing to participate in some cross-project work at times also.
How?
- As part of the Employability Empowerment scheme you will be employed by Oasis Hub Waterloo for 12 hours a week.
- 10 hours of this time will be working with a specific team in our Community (ranging from Advice Centre and Foodbank, to Community & Family or Youth work).
- 2 hours a week will be spent doing mandatory training and skills workshops and meeting. There will also be the opportunity to access further optional training appropriate to your needs.
- This unique opportunity requires commitment to both strands of on the job work and employability training. This will be demonstrated by your enthusiasm, reliability and punctuality for both work and training.Training and support may include:
-
- Interview skills sessions
- CV workshop
- Job search support
- Meeting with a professional mentor
- Administrative skills
- English or Maths courses
- We are partnering with Morley College for this exciting pilot. Each successful candidate will be offered bespoke support through Student Advice Services, and be able to access a huge range of courses and training offered through Morley College. Financial assistance is available to support each candidate.
- For candidates who make it to interview, we would also like to offer further support to access to relevant courses through Morley College

I’ve got professional skills to offer – how can I get involved?
We are looking for professional mentors to offer support to each candidate during their placement. This will involve regular sessions organised between the candidate and mentor, to guide and actively seek pathways and potential opportunities alongside the candidate. It may also involve looking at job opportunities, job applications, seeking suitable training and professional development skills – such as consolidating or tailoring CVs to suit different roles, interview skills.
We envisage this being a 6-8 month commitment, beginning once the candidate is settled in their placement, and supporting them beyond the end of their time with Oasis.
This will give the candidate some more insight into areas of work, and offer bespoke support outside of their work setting and any formal training/workshops they undertake. We hope this mentor relationship will actively encourage, give confidence and skills to the individual, as well as empower them in their journey to find longer term employment.
If you feel you would like to participate and offer your skills and time, please get in touch with us.
Please note, this is a volunteer role, and a DBS check will be required.
